We are looking for suggestions to improve the school. We are looking at the canteen this term.
If you have any good strategies to make our canteen a world-class canteen, please let us know. We welcome suggestions on the other areas of the school too.
Here are some suggestions from 2 of your fellow schoolmates in 2010:

Dear Mrs Lee, Hello! I hope you would add more food stores because the queue is really very long 30mins of recess almost more than half of it is gone because of the queuing. Its like a world war 3 We should keep the canteen clean because the p1's-p3's are messing up the canteen!!!for the P4'S-P6'S we need to eat in a dirty environment and the canteen is now dangerous because of the footballs flying from the courtyard i think it is not safe. Thanks

Really nice to know that many like to have a clean canteen & everyone plays a part. Any suggestion to get pupils involved in keeping the place claen? Will check if we can increase the number of stalls. For the time being, will the pupils consider pre ordering their food?
Please submit all suggestions online by 7 May 2011. You may post your suggestions online. Do remember to include your name and class. Any anonymous suggestions will not be considered.

Dear Mrs Lee,
ReplyDeleteI have a suggestion. Can the classroom clock be placed at the centre of the front classroom wall? During examinations, I sit at the front corner of the classroom(I am index number one) and the classroom clock is at the other corner, thus it is very difficult to tell what the time is.
Of course, I can roughly see what time it is. However, I cannot see where the minute hand is pointing properly. A few minutes is very important in an examination paper. If I have only a few minutes left and time is tight, I have to know how many minutes I have left to plan my time well.
Watches can be used, but some students do not wear watches. Our watches might be seconds faster than the classroom clock, too. Seconds are very important, too. One can write a sentence in ten seconds.
Once again, can the classroom clock be placed in the middle of the front wall of the classroom?
Thank you!

Dear Mrs. Lee, I would like to propose solutions for two problems in the canteen.
ReplyDelete- Firstly, very few tries their best in keeping the canteen clean. It could be because it isn't fun to do so. Also, it can waste time as recess is only 30 minutes.
xx - We can tell everyone to play a part in keeping their rubbish and find a way to make it fun. For instance, give a sticker, but make it sutable for the person (based on gender and age).
xx - We can also slightly extend the recess time by 5 or so minutes and use it to get people to clean up the canteen.
The second pro
- Another possible solution is that the queues are very long and 60% of our time during recess is used to queue up to buy food.
xx - We can have instead of 2 levels sharing 1 recess, have only 1 level sharing 1 recess.
xx - We can have more store vendors which means more rows of queues and can reduce the time needed to queue up.
Thanks,

ReplyDeleteI think that the pupils in Nanyang Primary do more canteen duty after recess as the canteen is filthy after recess. The pupils throw their trash on the floor as and when they want. This is really and inconsiderate act. I think they are taking the anuties and uncles who clean the canteen for us foregranted. I think they should just clean up after themselves and learn the hardwork and effort those aunties and uncles put in. After some time when it became an habit, I believe that the canteen can be more welcooming and clean so that you will not want to vomit when you see the trash and litter while eating.
The canteen is dirty because the students sometimes forget to bring their plates to the cleaning area. I suggest to have an announcement over the PA system during each recess to remind students to clean up after themselves.

ReplyDeleteHi Mrs Lee, regarding about how to keep the canteen clean... i have a suggestion to share.
1) can we have a prefect walking around with a signboard to remind P1-P2 that says - "PLEASE CLEAR YOUR PLATES & RUBBISH". THANK YOU. :) during P1-P2 RECESS TIME.
Secondly, I would like to comment if we can improve the food in the stalls?
(e.g.)
1) Chicken rice + MORE cucumber
2) MORE GREEN vegetables - as an option for students who loves green vegetables
3) Drink stall - sell home made barley water
Thank You very much. :)

Dear Mrs. Lee,
ReplyDeleteI understand that some stall owners allow pupils/teachers to reserve their either in the morning or during break/recess and then collect it during recess/lunch through "Cutting the queue".
Some teachers forbid pupils from doing so as it is a form of cutting the queue but, some teachers are doing the same thing by collecting their food through cutting the queue. A excuse would probably be that teachers have lessons to conduct and cannot afford to be late etc. However, most students who stay back have lessons. Don't they have to reach their classes on time as well?
I hope that either, BOTH pupils and teachers are allowed to reserve and collect it later or NEITHER the pupils nor the teachers are allowed to do so.
Thanks and have a nice day!

ReplyDeleteDear Mrs. Lee, during recess, many pupils play chess in the courtyard, and like to use the walls as their goals, but sometimes the ball flies too high and bounces over the edge, either into the car park, or a small area behind it(car park),or even worse, the chess corner. It may not be safe for people playing chess below as I almost got hit at the chess corner once by the soccer ball myself. Thanks.
Dear Mrs Lee,
ReplyDeleteThe canteen has too much people who 'chope' for their friends. Can the school consider banning 'chope'? It is very difficult to buy food when a single (inconsiderate) person in front of you invites 5 other people to go behind him.

Please change the water taps in Campus 1. The taps are too tight, and some pupils might have a difficulty using the tap and even some adults have a problem pushing the tap! The tap also sprays in all directions when you are using it, so the pupils' shirts and the floor gets very wet. Pupils might also trip and fall because of the wet floor. Also the tap does not spray water if your hands are not pushing it, so one of the pupil's hands is washed, while the other must be pushing the tap, making washing hands with soap difficult. I suggest visiting the wash area and using the tap to understand what I am commenting about.

Dear Mrs Lee, It seems like my message to you is too long and I have to send it to you as many posts. I will indicate "From Corey Koh (3I)" at the beginning so you won't be confused with other pupil's comment.
ReplyDeleteDear Mrs Lee,
I would like to improve the following things about the school canteen.
1) Customer Service
Issue:
There are some good and friendly vendors such as the Malay, fruits, drinks and snack stall aunties and uncles. There are also some very grumpy vendors like Mr Wong Yat Tuck of the Chicken Rice stall. He is forever unhappy unless he sees regular customers. He is also very bad-mannered as he does not entertain us if we want to buy extra chicken or extra meat. This action always gets him very, very cantankerous. But my problem is, even though I buy the adult portion, it has only 3 small spoonfuls of chicken and it is never enough for me. Mrs Lee, he got on my nerves so much, I am going to order one whole chicken from him one day and share with my classmates! I think he will remember me forever!
Suggestion:
Have a monthly award system for the pupils to vote for the most ____** stall operator. The prizes must be presented in front of all the pupils during assembly and their names should be stuck to a bulletin board under their respective categories.
** Maybe the title can be the most grumpy stall operator award or the most friendly stall operator award or both. The prize for them can be something encouraging – like a certificate.
2) Overcrowding
Issue:
There are too many people at the stalls during recess and lunch times.
Suggestions:
1) Move some enrichment classes and CCAs to Saturdays and Sundays.
2) Have more stalls. If there are not enough places for new stalls, have some stalls that are mobile like a mobile van stall that is parked at the side of the canteen.
3) Sometimes, the drinks and fruits stalls are over-crowded. In order to overcome this issue, I suggest that we have more vending machines including those that dispense freshly made drinks.
3) Cleanliness
Issue:
The canteen is always very dirty.
Suggestions:
1) Tell the collection point workers to give cards to kids that returned their bowls and plates. The cards can be changed into blue slips after a certain number is reached.
2) Appoint Canteen Monitors for all levels to stand at the collection point, rubbish bins, tetra pack recycling bins (which is now not in use anymore as it has been removed from its place at the canteen) and around the canteen. If they see a pupil trying to dispose a tetra pack in the rubbish bins, they should tell them to dispose them in the recycling bin. They can also hand out the card if they see a pupil disposing his or her litter properly.
From Corey Koh (3I) continue.
ReplyDelete4) Bookshop
Issue:
The bookshop is currently selling toys. The pupils buy them and play in class and in the canteen. It is affecting pupils around the school. - especially in the canteen and classrooms. In the canteen, they are affecting people who are eating while they play. In class, they are very distractive.
Suggestion:
The bookshop should not be allowed to sell toys.
5) Health
Issue:
The school buses produce a lot of gas emissions when they are parking in school with their engines running. It is also against the Law to do so if I am correct.
Suggestions:
1) Do not allow the school buses to turn on their engines until they are ready to leave. As for the pupils, I understand that they will be feeling very hot in the school bus without air-con while the engine is off. So, I think to solve this problem, the student can only board the buses from 1.40pm to 1.45pm.
6) Stuffiness
Issue:
The canteen is truly stuffy because some fans are always redundant.
Suggestions:
Turn on all the fans to create ventilation and possibly to install more fans or some high power wall fans with water spray.
7) Washing area
Issue:
The area is very dirty and unhygienic. I wonder how often they are cleaned.
Suggestions:
1) The area has to be cleaned and dried after every recess.
2) The taps must be changed to those with automatic sensors to prevent our oily hands from touching the taps. It will be easier for the P1 and P2 too.
3) There should be more soap dispensers because we have to walk a distance with wet hands to get soap. Meanwhile, we are facing the risk of losing our queue line while doing so. We also have to walk another distance with soapy hands to wash it. If people take our queue, the soap is dried when our turn comes.
From Corey Koh (3I) last post.
ReplyDelete8) Fish Tank
Issue:
It is no longer attractive as it was when I was in P1. It used to have lots of small varieties of fishes, lobsters, crabs and prawn etc. Now one of the tanks is full of big Koi fish and sharks only. The sands are dirty, the background stickers are peeling and the ornaments is just not enough. The water is greenish and yellowish. I also see a lot of uneaten feeds floating in the tank.
Suggestion:
1) Please clean the fish tank regularly and make it more attractive. It is a great place to be during recess time.
2) Have student take turns to clean up the tank regularly.
9) Vending Machine (New)
Issue:
There has been a grossly elevated inflation of 28.6% in the price of Vico chocolate malt drink in the new vending machine (from the old price of $0.70 to now $0.90 per packet). Our country’s forecast of inflation rate this year is only 3%- 4%.
The varieties of drinks have also dwindled by 25% (2 items which are Milo and Soya Bean drink are gone). Milo is the most popular drink but it is now available only in the drink stall which contributes to the long queues and over-crowding.
Suggestion:
1) The school must monitor the prices of the food and drinks sold in the canteen which includes the vending machine.
2) Currently there are 5 buttons for Vico and the buttons occupied ¼ of the total slots in the vending machine. (I understand why. Because the inflation is 28.6%. The vendor can make more money that way!) Milo, being the most popular drink, the vendor should replace 3/5 of the Vico slots with Milo.
Thank you.

P.S.: Mrs Lee, can we have some typing classes during our IT lessons? It took me about 3 days typing this super long message to you with 2 fingers.

ReplyDeleteDear Mrs Lee,
During recess and lunch times when we are queuing up for our food, many pupils would walk up to their friends to join in the queue. They just squeeze into the queue in front or behind their friend/friends. This is something I really do not like. By cutting queue in this manner, the pupils who diligently queue behind suffers and have to queue for a much longer time to get their food. It sometimes took me as long as 20 minutes before I get to buy my lunch!
Dear Mrs Lee, I think that if all of us queue up in an orderly manner, everyone would get their food quicker (I hope you could do something to it)
Dear Mrs Lee,
ReplyDeleteThough it is already past 7 May, I hope to suggest something that will benefit the school.
When my mother and I went down the courtyard stairs after a programme, at about 9pm, my mother was not able to see the steps clearly as the lights at the sides of the stairs were not turned on. This reduced the visibility of the steps and thus my mother had to proceed cautiously.
I suggest that you install reflective strips on the steps. This way, visibility of the steps is thus enhanced and people will have an easier time going down the steps. This will benefit many within the school, especially those who arrive early on the morning when it is still dark and those who leave the school late in the day when the sky is beginning the darken. They will then have a lower chance of them missing a step and hence fall down, injuring them in the process, especially during rainy weather and if the lights at the side are not turned on.
I hope that you will take this into consideration and install reflective strips, even though it is past the dateline.
Thank you!

Hi Mrs Lee,
ReplyDeleteI have a few points to make.
1) Regarding the campus 2 AV items
For the visualisers, when a movement is made underneath, it will change to another colour eg. green , blue, red and so on.I hope that it will not do so as it is very disruptive during lessons and we all get distracted.
2)Regarding hygeine matters
In campus two , there are not many toilets with soap and I find it really unhygenic as a person might poop and found out that there is no soap to wash their hands. Please get the cleaners to refill the soap after on has finished.
3)Regarding the guppy pong in campus 2 lv 1
Some people throw food like apple bits, twisties and other food that fishes should not eat.I realised that quite a few guppies have died due to this lately.I find that these people are very inconsiderate as they know that they should not give this type of food to them.I hope that you can give a speech to the campus 2 children about this when you are free.
Thks n regards,
Olivia Law 4I
Dear Mrs Lee, sometimes when I queue up to buy food, I see some people cutting the queue. As a prefect, I went and told them to queue up. Then, they said they "reserved the food" and ignored me. Almost everyone who cut queue gave that excuse. Is there really such a system whereby someone can "reserve the food"?
ReplyDeleteThanks,
